Capturing Rome on 35mm Film
About this Post
In this article, I will discuss a bit of traveling and photography. For this reading I cover capturing Rome on 35mm film navigating other serene landscapes throughout Italy.
You can view the small gallery of landscape photographs directly below this section. Later in the post are a series of short but descriptive details of the trip.

Highlights of Photographing Rome
The Forum
I liked being able to go for a walk and be right next to the Roman Forum. There wasn’t public access to go into it but the road going through it basically provided that close proximity feeling. I booked my stay about a mile away from the Colosseum. I was able to walk down to the Colusseum and Forum before the sun started coming up. I only got photos of parts of the Forum during this light window. The Colusseum is bathed in sodium vapor flood lights. Whereas the Pantheon is indoors. With the way tourism getting busier today, the crows was so dense outside I not many people were able to get in.
The Coffee
My other favorite aspect of Rome is that, like other parts of Italy, you don’t have to go far to get a world renowned espresso. With Rome being decent sized city, and considering how much I enjoy walking through busy cities, I’d make frequent stops for a sparkling water and cafe at a bar. In Italy their coffee shops are mostly ‘bars’. You order your coffee, drink it there while having a conversation with a stranger, then you’d pay and move on.
Dislikes of Photographing Rome
The Crowds
This led to a couple of disappointments. The Pantheon was too overcrowded to get in and so was the Trestervere fountain. The Colosseum was the same . Even though the fountain and Colosseum is outside, the attractions are usually obligatory nice-to-haves that I could care one way or the other so I just kept walking through the alleys enjoying just being in an ancient city.
The Tourism
When I refer to the tourism here, what I mean is that it was kind of a challenge to find authentic Italian food. The menus seemed to accomodate the American palette. For example there were a lot of alfredo and spaghetti with meatballs items. It was almost like being at a Roman-themed park located in the US. The food I had in Rome was fine. Later after getting into Orvieto and then Verona, the food was a lot better and I felt more like being in a different country. I just find it more inspirational.
